Val di Funes is a farming valley below the jagged Odle peaks. It has no large ski area, which is exactly why we like it in winter: the snow is quiet, the roads are empty, and the farms are still working.
The small church of St. Johann in Ranui stands alone in a meadow with the Odle behind it. In snow, it is one of the most photographed views in the Dolomites, and you can walk to it from the village of Santa Maddalena.
A day in the valley
- A morning winter walk on cleared paths above the valley.
- Lunch at a farm that serves its own strudel.
- An afternoon sledging run that ends at a hut.
Sledges can usually be hired at the huts. Wear waterproof trousers and proper boots, and keep your speed down on the bends.
If you want to ski for a day, the larger areas of Val Gardena are a short drive away, and your planner can arrange the transfer.
